SPRING FEST: The Spring Fest, or SF, as this grand event is popularly known today, started quite early, when just the three halls – Nehru, Patel and Azad- were in existence. During the seventies and the eighties and to some extent in the nineties, many celebrated doyens of Indian classical music were invited to perform on the occasion, but this has gradually become rare in the recent years, giving way to rock bands and hard metals. The annual and cultural festival- Spring Fest has been celebrating the true spirit of youth for over seven decades, growing bigger and better with every passing year. The lamps on the chatais are lighted, while all other light sources switched off, to showcase the art-panels made by the flickering lamps.

Rangoli competition is organized as an inter-hall event along with illumination on the day of Diwali, the festival of lights. Saraswati puja started since the early days and in more recent times Ganesh, Durga and Kali pujas, and Christmas are also celebrated with great pomp. Along with the tradition there was modernity with the celebration of New Year bashes.
Student life at IIT Kharagpur has two foci and it is indeed difficult to judge which of them is the stronger bond for a KGPian. One is around the Departments and the institute, made up of the intricate lectures on the matters and machines, the joy of labour and discovery at the labs, and of course, the endless hours in front of the mesmerizing computers.
The other focus is around the Halls of Residence and the Gymkhana. It is in this place that a bright student has his/her early lessons on nationalism and brotherhood, leadership and teamwork, responsibility and balance. The typical image of a KGPian as studious nerd was never true. Builders in the true spirit of the term, the students created their own modes of having fun even through far from the hustle and bustle of the city of Kolkata. Fun, food, picnics on land and water, fancy dress, film hall outings- they were all a part of the students’ life from the beginning.
