Research Area: Optimization of metal forming processes
Duration: 2.5 Months
From where you did Foreign Training?
Ans: I have done my foreign training from University of Warwick, Coventry, England. It is basically half into the mathematics department and a half for Warwick Manufacturing Group
How was your experience?
Ans: My experience was pretty good. It was the first time for me to associated with research. I met a lot of people from different countries, made new friends, travelled to a few places, and worked on the latest research in the field. It was an interesting experience overall.
Do you think foreign training is important?
Ans: Yes, very much. Because In KGP everyone is not doing programming. And as far as academic is concerned, we are only concerned with getting good grades, maintaining good CGPA. But if someone wants to do research, then he/she need an earlier little research experience to go on with. Anyone wants to do a job, then he can join internship in the corporate world or in a company, else he takes up research related to ML or programming related field, in which his skill will develop. So it will be a good experience for the researcher as well for entering in the corporate world. But if you don’t want research in future, then you can eliminate FT as an optional choice.
How did you apply for FT? What difficulties did you face for it?
Ans: I was selected by prof G.P. Rajashekhar. Then I have applied into FT portal by IRC, then I got selected.
I have mailed tons of email, but my internship is offered by Prof G.P Rajashekhar. There was a test, after that one CV selection process then I got selected. Not a big hassle, but it was a long process.
Do you think there is any role of CG for getting FT?
Ans: Actually, Yes. But you don’t need to be 9.5 pointers. Maintaining a good CG is important for JOB and Interview
What were some things that impressed you there and you think needs to be implemented here at KGP as well?
Ans: Work culture is not that intense. Everybody leaves their office by 5 pm. If you working then really hard and if not then nothing
If you could start it all over again, what would you do differently?
Ans: Study hard. I would have applied in my 2nd year as well. So that I have more internship experience.
What would you suggest to fellow KGPians?
Ans: Don’t apply to go there and roam around. Have a research experience. Work with your professor. Have a good time with him. If one keeps all these in mind then FT is not a very difficult job. If you are interested in research or unsure about it, you can try doing a research internship the next summer. I would suggest you go for the best project option you get and to also look for opportunities in programmes like MITACS, DAAD, S N Bose, IITKGPF etc. Don’t be disheartened if you don’t get an FT, its anything too special, and you aren’t missing out on anything.
