Swagata Roy | Metallurgical and Materials Engineering

Institute of Physical Metallurgy and Metal Physics, -

Research Area: Molecular Dynamics study on Mg- CaMg Laves phase interphase.

Duration: 2 Months

How did you apply for FT?
I mailed many professors who were working on molecular dynamics as I was interested in it. Some of them gave me a positive response. As I was eligible for DAAD wise scholarship, it was easier for me to get a project. An impressive and precise SOP always gives you an upper hand.

How did you manage your expenses?
I was fully funded by the DAAD -Wise program. It's a bit difficult to get selected for this as they require high CGPA. Students who aim for Mitacs or DAAD should try to boost their CG as much as possible. I also got Mitacs, but I preferred DAAD-Wise as it was more flexible.

How was your experience?
In short, it was awesome! The work culture was nice over there. It wasn't hectic and my professor was very understanding and helpful. Every day, he spent time to analyze my work, gave me inputs and guided me throughout. Apart from research, I found time to travel to all neighboring countries and explore!

What is the role of CG for getting an FT?
It plays a crucial role as many scholarship programs have CG as qualifying criteria. In the case of low CG, a proper research experience would help you. You could ask the professors for funding too.

What are your suggestions for fellow KGPians about FT?
I would definitely advise them to start early. You might have to mail a lot of professors and it requires time and patience. Never give up, wait patiently and keep mailing until you succeed.
