Undergraduate Studies

Admission into IIT Kharagpur's undergraduate programs (along with all other IITs) is only through the Joint Entrance Exam - Advanced (JEE-Advanced) conducted by the Joint Admission Board (JAB, website https://jeeadv.ac.in/). An Indian student must first appear in and qualify in JEE Mains Examination (organised by the National Testing Agency, website: https://jeemain.nic.in/webinfo/Public/Home.aspx) in order to appear for the JEE-Advanced test.

JEE Mains is conducted only in India while JEE Advanced is conducted in India as well as in select foreign locations (currently Singapore, Dubai, Dhaka, Kathmandu, Addis Abbaba, and Colombo).

Candidates of Indian origin, regardless of citizenship, are treated at par with Indian nationals in matters of JEE and therefore must appear for JEE-Mains in order to qualify for JEE-Advanced.

Foreign nationals, as defined below, are exempt from taking the JEE Mains and can directly appear for the JEE Advanced.

The relevant excerpt from the 2018 JEE Brochure is reproduced below:

" Eligibility criteria for Foreign nationals :

Candidates who are NOT citizens of India (by birth or naturalized), do not belong to PIO/OCI category, and whose parents are not citizens of India and do not come under PIO/OCI category at the time of registering for JEE (Advanced) 2018 are treated as foreign nationals. Seats allotted to foreign nationals are supernumerary with a cap of 10% of total number of seats in every course. However, the seats allotted to PIO/OCI card holders will be under the OPEN category, but not supernumerary.
